The true measure of any organization and its people are the consistent results they deliver and how those results are achieved. There is an evolution happening in both organizational and individual performance. Prior to and for two to three decades following WWII and the Industrial Age, the accountability and responsibility for setting goals, establishing expectations, measuring performance, determining training, and providing feedback resided solely with management.
That model worked in a primarily domestic, industrial, manufacturing-based economy. But as globalization and technology continue to transform what we produce, how we produce, and where we produce that model is now rapidly shifting as well. The time from opportunity inception to decision implementation is now hours and days, not months and years.
The accountability for performance must reside with everyone in the organization, not a select few leaders. Is it imperative that each of us assume primary, not secondary, accountability and ownership for our performance and contribution? In today’s work environment no one wants to be managed. It is now our opportunity to move from just reviewing performance to pursuing performance and from performance management to performance enablement. It’s time for everyone to lead their performance!
